What’s the Forum?

The 2016 CAHM forum offers something for everyone. It’s a place for concerned parents, family members and caregivers who want to know how they can help someone they love so much. It’s a place to learn from experts who are there to share what they have learned through years of education and experience. It’s a place to join with others who are on the same path as you. And it’s a place to receive respite, healing and support.  Whether you are someone looking for answers or someone who has a desire to help others, we believe the forum will impact you wherever you are on life’s journey.

This year marks our 10th year of having the Forum celebrating life and mental wellness!  But it is a bittersweet celebration as we also remember that it is also the 10th anniversary of the loss of Todd Kennemer, the young man to whom this event is dedicated.  You can read more below about the Kennemers’ journey, and help us remember and celebrate Todd’s life and his legacy by attending, sharing, connecting and supporting.

Forum Title:  From Hopelessness to Hope & Healing

Forum Description: The Community Alliance for Healthy Minds (CAHM) is dedicated to helping individuals and families lead happier, healthier lives through improved mental wellness.  The 2016 CAHM Forum, entitled From Hopelessness to Hope & Healing, is co-hosted by the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) Institute for Palliative Care.  It is an all-day event designed to provide education, support, resources, skill building and stigma-reduction to the community.  We recognize the need to integrate the mind, body and spirit to achieve balance and improve quality of life.  The Forum attracts individuals who have mental illness, substance abuse issues, and chronic illnesses, and their families and caregivers, in addition to those who have lost loved ones to suicide.  We also invites anyone interested in learning more about mental wellness, recovery and palliative care in a shame-free atmosphere that promotes healthy living, symptom reduction, behavioral management, and overall life satisfaction.  The day includes a nationally renowned keynote speaker, repeating breakout sessions on a variety of topics, lunch, a resource and art fair, music and a lot of opportunities for people to connect, respect, and enjoy one another through a host of lived experience.  The Forum is a day of optimism where we share stories and our collective wisdom to help one another see that hope and healing are possible and viable paths for today, tomorrow and the future ahead.

CAHM was founded in response to the death of a child – the suicide of a young man with mental illness.  His parents turned their tragedy into opportunity; an opportunity to reach out and help others accept and embrace their own or their family members’ mental health or substance abuse challenges, to explore effective ways to maximize positive outcomes in times of resistance and apparent chaos, and to gain strength through understanding and community support. At CAHM, we all believe that by empowering each other and ourselves, and capitalizing on our individual and combined knowledge and strengths, we can overcome anything!   We are again thrilled to offer a day of learning, resources, celebration, and collaboration to help us and our families travel this road to healing and make the most of what life has to offer.
